OOH vs DOOH: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Choose?
In short: OOH (out-of-home) is the umbrella term for every advert people see outside the home. DOOH (digital out-of-home) is the part of OOH shown on digital screens. Classic OOH uses printed posters that stay up for the whole booking; DOOH rotates adverts on LED or LCD screens and can change the message by time of day.
What is classic OOH?
Classic OOH means printed advertising: a poster pasted onto a roadside billboard, a printed panel slotted into a bus shelter, or a vinyl wrap on a wall. Once it is up, your advert is the only one on that site for the whole booking period – usually a two-week fortnight in the UK.
- 100% share of the site – nobody else appears on the same panel while you are booked.
- Visible all day, every day – the advert does not rotate away.
- Strong for brand building – repeated, steady exposure on the same route makes a name familiar.
- Lead time – artwork has to be printed and posted, so plan a little ahead.
What is DOOH?
Digital out-of-home (DOOH) uses screens instead of paper. Several advertisers share one screen, and each advert plays for a few seconds in a loop. Because the content is digital, campaigns can launch quickly and change without reprinting.
- Flexible messages – show a breakfast offer in the morning and a dinner offer in the evening.
- Fast to launch – no printing or posting; the artwork is uploaded.
- Motion and brightness – screens catch the eye, especially after dark.
- Programmatic buying – some screens can be bought automatically, like online ads, based on time, location or audience.
Digital is now the larger part of the UK market: in 2025 it made up 67% of total OOH revenue of £1.44bn (Outsmart, Feb 2026).

Which should you choose?
It depends on your goal and your area:
- Choose classic OOH if you want steady, round-the-clock visibility on a route your customers use every day – for example near your shop, showroom or office.
- Choose DOOH if your message changes often, you want to launch quickly, or timing matters – for example a weekend sale, an event or a seasonal menu.
- Combine both for the strongest results: classic sites to build familiarity, digital screens to push timely calls to action.
Frequently asked questions
Is DOOH more expensive than classic billboards?
Not always. On a digital screen you share the site with other advertisers, so you pay for a share of the time. The price depends on the location, the size of the screen and how often your advert plays.
Can I show video on a digital billboard?
Many screens support simple animation or video, but roadside screens often have rules about motion for road safety. Always check the specification of each screen before producing artwork.
How long does each advert play on a screen?
It varies by screen, but adverts usually play for a few seconds each in a repeating loop. Your media planner can tell you the loop length and how many times your advert will play.
