What Is OOH Advertising? A Plain-English Guide for UK Businesses
In short: out-of-home (OOH) advertising is any advert people see while they are outside their home – on billboards, bus shelters, LED screens, buses, stations and airports. It helps businesses reach large local audiences, build brand recognition and stay visible in the places people live, shop and travel.
What is OOH advertising?
Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is advertising placed in public spaces rather than on a phone, TV or newspaper. If you have walked past a poster at a bus stop, driven past a roadside billboard or seen an advert on a screen at a railway station, you have seen OOH.
In the UK it is sometimes called outdoor advertising, billboard advertising or poster advertising. The industry body, Outsmart, represents the companies that own and sell these sites.
Classic OOH and digital OOH (DOOH)
There are two main types:
- Classic OOH – printed posters pasted or fitted onto a site, such as a 48-sheet roadside billboard or a 6-sheet panel in a bus shelter. One advert stays up for the whole booking.
- Digital out-of-home (DOOH) – LED or LCD screens that show adverts in rotation. Messages can change by time of day, and campaigns can go live quickly.
Digital is now the larger part of the market. In 2025, UK OOH revenue reached a record £1.44bn, and digital screens made up 67% of it (Outsmart, Feb 2026). Growth continued into 2026: OOH spend rose 15% in the first quarter of the year (AA/WARC, Jul 2026).
What is OOH advertising used for?
OOH is used when a business wants to be seen by lots of people in a specific place, again and again. Here is what that means in practice:
- Reaching a whole town or city at once. A roadside billboard on a busy route is seen by commuters, shoppers and visitors every day – including people who never follow you online.
- Building a name people remember. Seeing the same brand on the way to work for two weeks makes it familiar. When people later search or need the service, your name comes to mind first.
- Being visible near the point of sale. A panel on the high street or near a retail park can remind people about a shop, restaurant or showroom just minutes away.
- Launching something new. A new branch, product or event gets noticed quickly when it appears across several sites in the same area.
- Supporting your digital marketing. People who see an advert outdoors often look the brand up afterwards, so OOH works well alongside Google, social media and your website.
- Adverts that cannot be skipped. A billboard cannot be blocked, muted or scrolled past, and it is on display 24 hours a day for the whole booking.
For a local business, this often means being the name people already know when they need a builder, a dentist, a car dealer or a new restaurant.
Common OOH formats in the UK
| Format | you see it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 48-sheet billboard (6m × 3m) | Main roads, junctions, retail parks | Big local reach and brand awareness |
| 6-sheet panel (1.8m × 1.2m) | Bus shelters, high streets, town centres | Pedestrians and shoppers near your business |
| Digital LED screen (DOOH) | Busy roads, city centres, shopping centres | Changing messages, time-of-day adverts, quick launches |
| Front-lit billboard | Roadside sites lit at night | Visibility after dark and in winter |
| Bus advertising | On the sides and backs of buses | Moving coverage across a whole town |
| Street furniture | Benches, kiosks, information panels | Eye-level adverts in walking areas |
| Airport and rail | Terminals, platforms, concourses | Business travellers and visitors |
Sizes are standard industry measurements; exact dimensions vary slightly by site, so check the specification of each location before designing your artwork.
How does an OOH campaign work?
- Set a goal. Do you want more footfall, more calls, or simply more people to know your name? This decides and how long you advertise.
- Choose your area and sites. Pick the towns, roads or postcodes your customers use. Look at traffic, nearby shops and how long people can see each site.
- Decide the booking period. Classic billboards are usually sold in two-week periods, often called fortnights. Digital screens can be booked more flexibly.
- Create the artwork. Keep it simple: one message, a few words, a clear logo and one call to action. Most people see a roadside advert for only a few seconds.
- Go live. The media owner prints and posts the poster, or uploads the design to the screen.
- Measure the results. UK audiences are measured by Route, the industry's audience data. You can also track QR code scans, website visits the area, branded searches and calls during the campaign.
How much does billboard advertising cost in the UK?
There is no single price. The cost depends on:
- Location – central London and major city routes cost more than smaller towns.
- Format and size – a 48-sheet roadside site costs more than a 6-sheet panel.
- Classic or digital – on screens you usually share the slot with other advertisers.
- Booking length and number of sites – longer and larger campaigns often get better rates.
- Production – printing, design and installation are sometimes charged separately.
The best way to know the cost is to ask for a quote for the specific sites and dates you want.

Frequently asked questions
Is OOH advertising still effective?
Yes, businesses keep investing in it. UK OOH revenue reached a record £1.44bn in 2025 (Outsmart). It works best for reach, local visibility and brand recognition, especially alongside online marketing.
What is the difference between OOH and DOOH?
OOH covers all advertising seen outside the home. DOOH (digital out-of-home) is the part shown on digital screens, adverts rotate and can be changed quickly.
Is billboard advertising worth it for small businesses?
It can be, when the sites are close to your customers live or shop. A few well-chosen local sites for a fortnight can work better than a large, spread-out campaign.
How long does a billboard campaign run?
Classic billboards are usually booked in two-week periods. Many advertisers book several fortnights in a row to build familiarity.
How is OOH advertising measured?
In the UK, audiences are estimated with Route data. Advertisers also track QR scans, website traffic the campaign area, branded searches, calls and store visits.
